Whale watching can be done from the shore with and without binoculars or via a Whale watching tour. Whales are typically here from Oct to Mar, with the peak months Dec to Feb. We watch whales from our lanai!!
Snorkeling can be done right off the shore or via a tour. Our beach is a good place to snorkel where you will see turtles and fish. Pro-tip: The best place on the island to snorkel is the ‘AHIHI-KINA‘U marine preserve. So many beautiful fish. There is a fee for parking but well worth it. Please read the 'In The Know' section for sunscreen rules.
There are a few tour providers on the island to facilitate equipping you with bikes, gear, and instructions to bike down Haleakala. You can be picked up at the condo or drive to the bike shop. Pro-tip: plan this for your very first morning of your visit because you have to get up early to leave and your internal time clock will be a little off with coming from the mainland anyway! We have used Haleakala Eco Tours and have been very happy with them.
There are so many spots to surf, paddleboard and foil on the island. You can rent gear on any part of the island. Some say the area to the left of our condo is where the locals like to surf. Pro-tip: You can contact Maui SUP Rentals, Alex at 808-269-7758 to deliver and pick up SUPS to your activity location. Tell them Kul512 sent you for a 20% discount.
Have a day to explore, consider spending it with a Road to Hana trip. It's best to start early in the morning so you have time to make it to the end but we have started later in the day and were still able to see a lot. Winding roads, waterfalls, black sand beaches, painted eucalypus trees, bamboo forests, beautiful overlooks and roadside fruit and banana bread stands. A trip you won't forget. Pro-tip: take towels, walking shoes and snacks. Also fill up with gas because there are no gas stations until you get to Hana! Also Waianapanapa State Park (black sand beach) is now requiring entry and parking reservations which can take up to 14 days. You can reserve here.
There are several tours you can take:
One of our favorite things to do is visit O'o farm located in the UpCountry. Here you get a tour of the organic farm, pick your vegetables and fruits and they prepare a wonderful meal for you. Pro-tip: Book early as they fill up quickly. http://oofarm.mybigcommerce.com/
If hiking is what you love then you have come to the right place. Trails that range from easy to hard. Pro-tip: Try this app or website All Trails!
Maui and golf. Not sure there are 2 other things that go together so well. The island is home to several world class courses. Pro-tip: Book ahead to ensure a tee time.
